A broken pool gate cost a life

February 21, 2011 by Michael Leave a Comment

The George Family - A broken gate resulted in the near drowning and subsequent death of their son Kaine

Journalist Barbara Messer contacted the Samuel Morris Foundation looking to write a story on a child drowning.  Karen George showed great courage in being willing to share her story about the tragic events surrounding the near drowning, hospitalisation and subsequent death of her son Kaine.

Kaine’s story and that of the George Family appeared in the Sunday Magazine section of the Herald Sun Newspaper on 20th February, you can read the full story at this link A broken pool gate cost us our son

As is the case in far too many drowning and near drowning incidents Kaine’s death involved a brief breakdown in supervision and access to the pool via non compliant pool fence/gate. In addition Kaine’s incident highlights a couple of other factors that often occur… recently moved into a premises with a pool, a rental property and a failure of a landlord and real estate agent to meet their moral if not legal obligations to ensure the safety of the property they rent out.

Thanks to Karen for sharing her story.

If you haven’t already viewed the video that was produced in partnership with KidsHealth NSW about common pool fencing problems take the time NOW to watch it ( protect your pool, protect your kids) and complete the online survey.
