Kyle and Jackie O’s donation debacle

August 20, 2009 by Michael Leave a Comment

Kyle and Jackie O’s donation problem in relation to Joshua Koman highlights the plight of near drowning survivors and the needs of the other 30 children disabled by near drowning each year.

Despite the recent problems associated with Austereo’s Kyle and Jackie O show donations to Joshua Koman and his family. Joshua’s tragedy helps to highlight the plight of children disabled by near drowning.

A family whose child is disabled as a result of near drowning will require a significant amount of equipment to maintain the daily care and quality of life for their child. This equipment includes items such as wheelchairs, bathing aids, hoists, ramps, vehicle modifications, home modifications, seating systems and many more. The total cost of providing all of the items required is often in excess of $100,000.

Unfortunately Joshua and his family are not alone in their needs,  every year in Australia there are around 30 children and their families left in a similar situation .

Every year 35 children aged 0 -4 lose their life to drowning, with over half of these occurring in backyard swimming pools, for every one of these deaths there are 3-4 children admitted to hospital following a near drowning and 1/5th of these children will experience a brain injury that results in life long disabilities.

The Samuel Morris Foundation, both prior to and following 2 Day FM’s fundraising  has assisted Joshua Koman and his family through the provision of several items of equipment, essential to his daily care and quality of life.

You can help us to help other children like Joshua by donating here
