Christmas day near drownings

December 25, 2010 by Michael Leave a Comment

Christmas Near Drowning warning message - Tree Image by Hiking ArtistWhat should have been a day of joy and celebration has turned into a nervous wait for two families, one from Melbourne and one from Sydney.

The Samuel Morris Foundation’s thoughts are with these families as they face a nervous wait to see if their children are fortunate enough to escape without a brain injury.

In both cases family members or friends who were visiting were able to commence CPR on their children, a factor which could make a significant difference to their outcomes.

These two events are another reminder about the drowning awareness and prevention messages:

  • ALWAYS supervise children in and around water,
  • to make sure pool fences are in good working order and compliant with safety standards,
  • enroll children in aquatics classes as soon as possible
  • learn CPR in case the unimaginable happens like it did to these two families today.

UPDATE @ 1830 hrs:

In another Christmas Day backyard pool near drowning a 12 year old has had a lucky escape following a near drowning in St Helens in South Western Sydney after being pulled from the pool by friends who noticed her in trouble. By the time ambulance officers arrived she had regained consciousness and was breathing normally, but was transported to hospital for observations.
