The NSW Coroner is hearing a special inquest into the drowning deaths of eight NSW children aged below three years. All these deaths occurred between 2006 and 2009.
A common factor in all of the deaths under review is a failure in the integrity of pool fencing or gates along with other matters.
The Samuel Morris Foundation has been granted leave to appear by the coroner. The Foundation has done a range of media interviews including Channels 7,9,10, ABC TV, ABC 702 radio on Deborah Camerons program and 2UE on Stuart Bockers program, highlighting the fact that the inquest is underway and reminding people of the importance of vigilance in supervision, and compliance with pool fencing requirements.
The Samuel Morris Foundation will continue to lobby governments at all levels to implement changes to legislation to make backyard swimming pools safer, and to reduce the tragic toll of child death and disability resulting from backyard swimming pools.
